The Bible says in the book of Leviticus, chapter 26, verses 9 and 10:
“For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new.”
Here, the word of God assures us that we will not labour in vain. God promises that nobody will labour without eating the fruit of his or her labour. This particular promise was given through the Prophet Moses.
More than 500 years later, God gave a similar message, but in more emphatic, more assuring and more powerful terms, through the Prophet Isaiah:
“And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.” (Isaiah 65:21 and 22)
As we see in all these scriptures, God does not intend that anybody should labour in vain in life. When we look at what is happening, however, we see that quite a lot of people are laboring in vain. A great number of people work, work and work, but they are not able to gather anything, whether for sometime or on a permanent basis.
Here, I am not talking about unbelievers; I am not talking about those who do not have Jesus in their lives. Rather, I am talking about children of God, genuine children of God. I mean those who have accepted Jesus into their lives and are following the Lord steadily with a good level of commitment everyday.
Why do many of us labour in vain? What are the forces behind vain labour in people’s lives? What are the steps to take to avoid vain labour? Or, where somebody is already experiencing some elements of it, what are the steps to be taken to come out of vain labour?
It is these questions, and others like them which may arise, that we want to try to proffer answers to in this short but life-changing book. We shall also suggest relevant prayer points that can be rendered against the prospect of vain labour in life.
But, first and foremost, let us look at a few other basic issues about laboring in vain. For example, we need to examine what we mean by laboring in vain. We need to look at who and who can labour in vain.
